[News] 090809 FT Island, Plagiarizes From English Band?

FT Island gets involved in plagiarism issues with song from their new album.

According to a particular discussion forum, there were criticisms saying that “Bing Bing Bing“, song from FT Island’s 3rd album, resembles English band, McFly’s “Five Colours In Her Hair“.

Some netizens uploaded both songs on blogs and communities, and pointed out that the interlude for both songs are similar.

However, based on the tele-conversation between FT Island’s management and one of the reporters, they revealed that they “didn’t know about it” and that they will investigate the issue and give their stand.

According to the Korea Music Copyright Association, the composer for “Bing Bing Bing” was registered under the name “HOONY”, and without any statements of samplings or remakes of the song.

[TRANS] What YG, Jung Sun Hee, Big mama, Insooni, Andre Kim, Shin Hae Chul, Rain and others have to say about DBSK

The voice of Xiah Junsu is Asia's treasure
-Matsuo Kiyoshi-

What people say about DBSK is that...
they are one of the few hoobaes who are polite and has good thoughts
-Comedian Jung Sun Hee-

DBSK is the singer with the best manners
-Show Music Tank PD-

(During an interview about Big Bang)
Oh! There is one singer that I admired as I watched them sing.
DBSK is really amazing,
They were singing a live performance and by watching them without a bias, they sing very well,
If they were ugly, they would be called men version of Big Mama.
Korean people have a preconception about DBSK and that is wrong.
-YG Entertainment Yang Hyun Suk-

We are a different genre so I don't think we are rivals.
DBSK is a sunbae that we acknowledge.
Everyone sings well and I think they put in a lot of thoughts into their choreography and performances.
They continue to show self-improvement and are setting a good example as sunbae.
-Singer G-Dragon-

I saw Xiah Junsu sing Resignation and it was the best.
A lot of singers sang my song but out of them all, it stood out the most and was sung very well.
-Big Mama-

-I sang a Goose's Dream with Yongwong Jaejoong and he sang it the best.
He is an idol singer, so I thought he could not sing well because he is just good looking and dances well but he sings better than me.
-Insooni-

I think I would have really liked it if i was a DBSK member.
They are an unbelievably amazing group.
-Kim Gun Mo-

-When they are singing their songs, and in their divided parts, they know exactly how to sing their part in order to complete the song. They are perfectly divided well.
-Music Critic Jung Byung Gi-

Unless you are a fan who buys an album and listens to the whole thing, you do not realize how Yongwoong Jaejoong can sing octaves without effort, how much density Xiah Junsu has in his voice, and how great of a song 'One' is.
-Triple Crown Kang Myung Suk-

Their appearances are needed to capture attention.
That is the only way the dying music industry might be vitalized.
In that sense, there must be a lot of teams like DBSK in the industry. I'm not talking about just idol singers.
Groups like DBSK who can powerfully capture the mass audience's attention is needed to revitalize the music industry.
-Tony An-

-Looking at hoobae singers these days, there are a lot of good looking hoobaes.
Out of all of them, I think DBSK is the best.
They seem to be fully prepared on stage.
-Singer Kim Dong Wan-

When looking at DBSK, I get the feeling that they are skilled.
Compared to before, they are so much better skill-wise.
Despite their skills, people have preconceptions, which is a problem,
and on stage their charisma is excellent.
They have other charms as well so there is a lot to be enviable about.
-Singer Evan-

DBSK is too good to remain as idol singers.
They can go further, as musicians to do well.
SM doesn't just have idol singers.
Of the existing idols, they are the most skilled group.
As for Xiah Junsu and Youngwoong Jaejoong,
they can be called the best singers in the music industry without comparison.
DBSK is really a great group.
-Composer KENZI-

Choikang Changmin's voice is very average.
But at times, the average excels many singers' voices.
-Papa Nia-

He takes care of everything about me before going on stage.
I think he is great and has a pure soul.
-Singer Jang Ri In-

-We feel envious and proud that DBSK succeeded in Japan.
-Singer Super Junior-

DBSK was candidates with us.
At first, we thought "what do we do~" "we are nothing~" when we were against DBSK
But when we saw DBSK cheering for us too, we felt the love at once between us singers.
Really, we felt very very thankful.
-Singer Tablo (Epik High)-

-It can't be said that DBSK is the best vocalist in Korea.
However, it is undeniable that it is hard to see a group able to make a beautiful harmony with just five members' voice.
This shows the possibility of a vocal group, not just celebrity like idol group.
This is the idol group after evolution in the 21st century.
-m.net 21c Artist-

I was impressed with DBSK when I saw them performing at the Great Hall of the People in China on July 2004.
It was a shock to see Chinese fans sending such passionate cheers. I feel pride that I am promoting Korean mass culture in foreign countries. I want to invite DBSK as models for fashion shows abroad. They have clear souls and pure qualities.
-Desinger Andre Kim-

Out of the singers that have sang my song, they have succeeded the most.
And they are also the first singers who fit my song so well.
-Composer Park Chang Hyun (DBSK 1st Single 'Hug' Composer)-

I like DBSK.
It is bit of an inconvenience that their chances to sing live are limited because of their strong choreography, but when I see their performance, I am drawn in.
-Singer Baek Ji Young-

-They are good young men.
In such positions, they greet well and are social.
They are always smiling and never shows fatigue.
Honestly, they are not very fluent in Japanese.
Even if they understand well, their speaking is not perfect.
Despite that, they really tried hard to do their interview in Japanese.
For words they didn't know, the asked their managers before hand and took note of it.
They tried their best to speak well and I could feel their efforts.
They really try their best.
-DJ 古家正亨- (this is the Japanese character of his name. His last name is Masayuki (?) but I can't really type his first name. >< Maybe someone who knows Japanese better can do his name?)

Even in the hard market right now, their influence in the music industry should be recognized. The music industry is going through hardships and in this situation, there was almost no singers who sold a lot of albums. But DBSK is unchallenged and has the powers to sell their albums. They do have a lot of teenage fans but recently, I think their fanbase has broadened to 20-30s. As the teenage fans get older, the average age of their fan base will broaden. Idol groups definitely go through evolution. They have both singing and dancing skills so they need to be recognized. -Singer Na Sung Ho (Noel)-

It is a good feeling that the younger generation singers are singing my songs. If DBSK remakes my song, it will have a different color. Even though the color will be different, I think they will be able to make a better song.
-Singer Jo Kwan Woo-

DBSK is just before perfection. They are the hottest trend going through various rumors and is a popular culture icon. When they become this era's new classic, we want to meet them again, more fashionable and fabulous. It won't be too late to complete the 'work' then.
-In December issue of VOGUE-

I listen to music. I like rock ballad and hip hop. As for singers, DBSK is the best.
-Volleyball athlete Kim Yeon Kyung-

The reason why there is so much interest in DBSK is because unlike most of the kid groups, their singing abilities are excellent. All five members sing and unexpectedly, presents a good harmony. It breaks the bias that boy bands cannot sing. This is what separates other idol groups and DBSK.
-Music critic Im Jin Mo-

Just at first glance, I could feel the strong charisma that made me realize why they become the millennium star. The composition of the five members, like the process of moving one picture, cannot be complete without the 5 members. I was surprised that the 5 stars, placed as one pleases, created such harmony. Truthfully, taking a group photograph is exponentially hard as the number of people. So during group photography, positions change and styles are frequently switched. But in DBSK's case, an impressive style was expressed just by them randomly standing and sitting there.
-Photographer Jo Se Hyun-

You should judge them by how much they love music and stop focusing on "lip synching idol stars winning awards." And this year was the year that DBSK had to win. Why keep denying it and how many albums did they sell... 300,000? Even when the music industry is reduced, they sold 300,000. That is praiseworthy. Do you know anybody who we call artists that sell over 50,000? And does the broadcasting stations buy those albums for the artists? Did the broadcasting station buy 300,000 copies of DBSK's album? Then, did you buy the albums of artists that you cheer for? Starting from there, saying "how does idol stars who lip sync win an award" is useless. Do you think that these days, just like those old days, the idols run away by lip sync because they can't sing? Just open the microphone and tell them to sing. They do well, very~
-Shin Hae Chul-

Before you curse on the young singers who dance and roll around, think about how many hours they invest into practicing to perform to the mass. Just like how natural-born talented artists dig only one hole, they sweat in order to improve themselves. Therefore, the older generation singers are wretched for criticizing these singers for their music perfection. If they receive reverence as a musician for these criticisms, the value of it is nothing.
-From Bestiz, who.au-

The rumors that the five members were supposed to lead five different teams due to their excellent skills, but due to financial pressure, was put in one team, doesn't seem totally false. The harmony that the five sing are solid and constant.
-IZM-

Thank you DBSK fans. DBSK and Kang Ho Dong is close, it's the truth really.
-Kang Ho Dong-

I feel envious of DBSK for their teenage fans. When DBSK performance ends, the teenage fans follow their van or wait in front of their company. But when I am done with a performance, my fans say, "Ji Hoon, great job." Park Jin Young hyung once asked me why I don't have teenage fans.
-Singer Rain-

These kids were wasted. They are all worthy to be solo artists, but formed a group.
-SM Director Lee Soo Man- *u're devil*

Even though it must be hard because so many people recognize them, they always come to greet when we are on the same program. It must be hard to just move around. When they reach the top, at least one hardship comes, but I hope they will get over it well.
-Singer The One-

purgatorio: eternal damnation

If you believe that such a place as purgatory exists, a place within which those who have recently died gather to expiate their sins, then Hoy Polloy's production of Ariel Dorfman's play is a vision of purgatory as bureaucratic star chamber. Absent here is fire and brimstone, stained glass and good old RC religious orthodoxy; instead replaced by sustained and systematic interventions that dissect the qualitative and quantitative effects of lives lived in the throes of selfishness, self interest and cynicism. (Especially toward those who should be more deserving of the finer points of human nature, like our own families). In fact, the next time you or your spouse decides to murder the entire family, please consider that the complexities and consequences of such an act will be given a thorough going-over in that transitional space between earth and heaven. Most interesting about Dorfman's script is an assertion that this all important interrogation in preparation for meeting our maker is itself, a bit of a furphy. Dorfman's Man and Woman, fixated upon religious conviction and therefore led to believe that the good consequence of confession will be paradisiacal, are instead tripped at the last hurdle when they discover that a quest for the devine will only ever result in eternal damnation. Damnation itself being a religious concoction, Dorfman's script cannot escape the conclusion that religious frameworks for interpreting existence are self sustaining labyrinths that always end at their beginnings. Confess your sins and paradise awaits you; although, paradise may not be all palm trees and pinacoladas. Like Joseph K, the central protagonist of Franz Kafka's novel The Trial, and his interpretation of that book's parable Before the Law, by all means aspire toward the all encompassing light, but never forget that the Law receives you when you come, and releases you when you go. In the words of some long forgotten B-grade actor, "If this is paradise, then give me hell".

Amidst a set resembling a stylised psychiatric ward, the Woman, wearing nondescript prison clobber, wakes from a horrendous dream only to discover that she is once again about to be interrogated by The Man. He wears exactly the same clothes, although his authority relating to matters Confessional is exemplified by a white dustcoat, a brief case and a list of accusations and demands pre-scripted on paper and attached to a clipboard. This first act of a 3 act play is an oblique and indirect reflection upon purgatory as an intellectual concept. It is as if Dorfman himself is struggling to ascertain exactly the meat and potatoes of his play, and you have to listen very closely to what's being discussed in order to glean from a minimal amount of information the meaning of this work. (A demand upon the part of the playwright that does not go unrewarded, as the second act reveals its dissection of human failings in lyrical and descriptive dialogue that illustrates much of the previous act's oblique dissertation).

As a two-hander, Dorfman's script is nicely conceived. Just as the roles switch during each act, from interrogator to person being interrogated, Dorfman manages to not only convey a sense that the Man and Woman we see in the first act may not necessarily be the same Woman and Man we see in the second act, but also, that an eternity may have passed since each revealed the tragic details of their murderous and conceited lives. By the beginning of act 3, we could be dealing with any one of the following: a male employee of purgatory who role-plays the Woman's murdered husband for the purpose of assisting the woman on her path to the Promised land: a woman and her murdered husband, the same woman also having murdered her children, while the conceited husband now attempts to forgive his dead wife for killing him and their children, in order for both to assist one another on their journey to the Promised land: Humanity itself, symbolised by an archetypal Man and Woman, two people attempting to find peace by confessing their sins, (and our own), within a Roman Catholic doctrine that itself is hypocritical, and therefore a sin, only to discover that the wilderness without reflects the wilderness within. That is, systemic and doctrinaire thought, particularly in relation to ontological matters, (or the spirit of things), can only ever grasp a part of the monumental sadness and indescribable futility of Death, and the journey toward infinity. To assert otherwise in relation to spiritual matters, as many religions do, is just another example of the vanity of human wishes, or complete stupidity.

As a difficult but rewarding ascent toward a path between doctrinaire thinking and something resembling pure truth, Purgatorio is a fearless dissection of religious hypocrisy that consistently yearns for something other than the usual bullshit human beings are subjected to during their lives. The play itself does not always succeed in articulating a vision of what resides beyond the smug walls constructed by religious powerbrokers. But then, it can't be expected to either. For if it did somehow suggest that death and infinity could be articulated in a clear and precise manner, then the play itself would become a mere description of that which by necessity, cannot be described. More important is its desire to see through the facade. If it so happens that in doing so Purgatorio's characters are eternally damned for trying, then the distinction of Hoy Polloy's production of Arial Dorfman's play should not be in doubt.

Micky and Hero to participate in m-flo Album

Dong Bang Shin Ki members Micky YooChun and Hero JaeJoong will be participating in Japanese famous hiphop duo m-flo’s 10th anniversary album.

Currently the 2 together with member Xiah JunSu are entangled in a discord and lawsuit with their management SM Entertainment. And with this album participation, it cast different interests on this case.

Dong Bang Shin Ki revealed through their Japanese official site on 4th August, “There will be many artistes participating in m-flo’s 10th year anniversary album. And of them are Dong Bang Shin Ki Micky YooChun and Hero JaeJoong.”

It has been known that the 2 will be participating in the song ‘Been So long’ according to the homepage. The album is set to be released on 16th September.

Meanwhile, here’s another news translation about the case between DBSK and SM Entertainment thanks to Felix for the headsup

[TRANS] 090802 TVXQ’s Japanese Contract Speculation

It has been confirmed that three members of TVXQ, YoungWoong Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu, have filed for a Exclusive Contract Validity Suspension and Provisional Disposition Request against SM Entertainment and have also filed for a Preservation of Evidence Request.

The Preservation of Evidence Request refers to, “Any account books, contracts, receipts, transfer slips or any other documents that will aid in calculating the exact income and expenditure of the requester,” and this was done to calculate the exact amount of money TVXQ earns.

There is more controversey to come as a statement was released that the members of TVXQ, till now, have never received information about the contents of their Japanese contract.

In 2005, TVXQ signed a contract with Avex Entertainment, one of the largest agencies in Japan, through SM Entertainment and have been working with both entertainment agencies ever since.

However, till now, the members of TVXQ have no idea what kind of contract the two agencies formed, and how their income is being divided in Japan.

A representative of the law firm that is helping the three members had a phone conversation with this reporter and stated, “Ever since TVXQ started their activities in Japan, they have never been given any information about how their income is divided or what their contract consists of.”

He also said, “We have tried numerous times to tell the agencies that what they are doing is unlawful and tried to convince them to show TVXQ the contract, but both agencies have been ignoring us,” and “The members have been diligently working for this company without even knowing exactly what kind of contract they are under.”

The Sejong law firm lawyer who is in charge of this lawsuit informed reporters in an interview of the problems regarding unfair division of income and complete honesty with the members and also stated that “We have not discarded the notion of filing for compensation later on.”

Avex Entertainment, who is in charge of all of TVXQ’s Japanese activities, wrote on their ofiicial website on August 1st and stated that TVXQ will continue on with their activities regardless of the current lawsuit.

life's a circus: big heart

The Circus Grand Illusion may not be Cirque De Soleil, but it still tours the world. With performances in Asia and Europe, its 3 pivotal performers, David, Vivian and Alex, find solace against the rigours of touring by becoming close friends; very, very close friends. In her own affectionate manner, Vivien hunts down the ambivalent Alex and they begin a relationship; while concealing from their best friend and homosexual compadre' David, the fact that this relationship has begun. What Vivian and Alex don't gamble on is that David also has the hots for Alex. He will not rest until Alex accepts wholeheartedly David's offer of love. As love tryst extraordinaire' set against the backdrop of life on the international touring circuit, Life's a Circus also examines the often considerable hiatus between individual aspiration and its consequent harsh actuality. Touring the world may appear to be every young performer's dream, but don't those lonely old hotel rooms all begin to look remarkably alike very quickly ? And so it is for Vivian, David and Alex. Only able to find genuine intimacy in each other's company, a considerable amount of fortitude will be required if our 3 circus performers are to survive life on the road, and their own voracious sexual appetites.

By necessity, life compressed into art is usually an oversimplified affair. During a one and a half hour theatrical production there is little time for examining the on-going and often unresolved aspects of a love tryst that gets completely out of hand. Given this, Life's a Circus in no way has pretensions toward understanding the more complicated aspects of human relationships. Mostly told in song, it is a slick and professional production with a whopping big heart. All the usual tricks are here: the set up of the love tryst; the concealing of information only to have it revealed unexpectedly, and with the resulting devastating consequences. Of course, each character comes away discovering more about each other, and therefore, more about themselves. And as a member of the audience your view about the relationship is being manipulated by the script in very specific ways. But in the end it doesn't matter. Everything is so on the money in this show. The song lyrics are very well written. The direction is snappy and spatially considered. Design wise, it looks great. And the performers offer up a sustained and effervescent commitment to their respective characters that is quite admirable. Of course, love is nowhere near as simple as Life's a Circus suggests. But appreciating the love that has gone into this show from all concerned was easy. And even though there is perhaps one song and therefore one ending too many, the audience applause throughout, and at the production's end, was thoroughly deserved. Life may not be as simple a circus as this show sometimes suggests. But even so, it was a very entertaining night in the theatre.

matilda's waltz: non narrative grunge

It's fair to say that in the theatre, an audience expects to be told a particular type of story. Usually, the story being told has some consistent and recognisable features. Characters are drawn from so called real life and reside within a defined psychological framework. The story itself is comprised of a sequence of events that have a logical progression through time, or a beginning, middle and end. And so it goes... We come to the theatre, we watch a story unfold, we experience its resolution, and then we go home. Matilda's Waltz mounts a direct challenge to this conventional interpretation of a what a story should be. In doing so, the performance locates itself within a wider grouping of recently formed ensembles who, raised on a diet of advertising, celebrity stardom, collective amnesia, and utter bewilderment, view live performance as an opportunity to give voice to what has essentially become a media saturated awareness. Like Matilda, if I am driving home one night in a borrowed car and accidentally kill a pedestrian, then is the shock-effect of such an incident powerful enough to wake me from my media induced slumber ? Apparently not, for in this shared household there lives upstairs either a spiritual manifestation of deceased grunge rocker Kurt Cobain, or a young man who believes himself to be that person. Why should anyone care about events occurring in the actual world when, faced with death, here we all are now, nothing more than 'Entertainers' ?

In spite of a script that lacks a little faith in the strength of its own convictions, there are some wonderful moments in Matilda's Waltz. A middle aged woman arrives at the house and for some unknown reason, advertises the virtues of a vacuum cleaner. The previously mentioned Kurt Cobain, whether impostor or ghost, descends the stairs and espouses the gospel according to grunge. Most interesting about these incidents is that each prevents the script from concentrating upon that which it initially set out to explore. That is, the consequences of a hit and run road accident. In fact, the more in which the script tries to pull itself back toward its plot, the more it only succeeds in becoming fixated with strange banalities. Most enjoyable is the tussle between these two elements, and how this manifests in performance. Consequently, Matilda's Waltz is forever undermining its own intentions. Desperate to tell the story of a road accident, the play becomes a car crash of the soul. Utterly bewildered by the circumstances each character finds themselves immersed within, all that can be achieved is an expression of this bewilderment. This, I would argue, is an essential tenet of the theatre; making Matlida's Waltz a sometimes shaky, but altogether interesting theatrical experience.
